Business As Usual/2016

Last year I started up a little writing business with the end goal of earning enough to self-publish two books. The first book should be available in the spring.

So now what do I do? January is only a few days old; however, people are already planning into the spring. I have to stay sharp and not go off into a certain kind of mind-set. This attitude would be–to use a cliche–resting on my laurels. Yes, it’s excellent that I achieved what I did. But I have to keep moving and trying new ideas. Today I made dates into the spring at Providence Place, my favorite assisted living facility. We’ll be writing a small book together, publishing it, then have enough copies so that the families of “my people” will see it and know that Providence Place keeps their loved ones busy. That’s the most important thing.

Also, Bloomsburg Public Library just got a new head librarian and I’ve already made a date to come there wearing a dress and holding my portfolio. A few neighbors have been quietly urging me on, telling me to “make the new librarian establish a book group or a writing group.” So several people are cheering me on.

I think the greatest thing that emerged from 2015 is my defining myself and where I want to go with this business. I get tired more easily–I can’t take on a lot–this is a tough area economically to earn any money at all unless you milk cows or drive a truck. But I use this sentence as my touchstone:

There’s something to be said for having a safe and manageable dream. I saw this sentence in a book review in Newsweek Magazine.
